Transgenic mice that overexpress vascular endothelial growth factor A (VGEF-A) were shown to have increased angiogenesis, elevated vascular permeability, and greater leukocyte adherence compared with wild type mice leading to a worsening DSS colitis.26 These changes to the microvasculature are associated with dilation and increased permeability,25 which could result in increased oxygen delivery to the lumen. The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is colitis.
