Consistent with this concept, findings from other studies suggest that fucosyltransferase 4, which, like FUT7, is also an alpha (1,3) fucosyltransferase, contributes to selectin-dependent leukocyte homing.24,25,33 This process involves intercellular adhesion as it occurs in SCD-related vaso-occlusion.24,25 Mice deficient in FUT7 retained the ability to recruit leukocytes to sites of inflammation but could not do so when the genes for FUT4 were knocked out.33 It is noteworthy that FUT7 and FUT4 each show distinct acceptor specificities. This evidence concerns the gene FUT4 and Schnyder corneal dystrophy.
