If for some reason, we were not able to do the trial at that time, and new data published in 1993 demonstrated that the use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) had reduced the mortality after ST-elevation myocardial infarction to 6.3% [3], to be able to demonstrate the same relative reduction of 30% mortality with treatment A, we would now need to recruit 6276 patients (again experiencing 338 events).
