Using the human hepatoma HepG2 cell line, it was shown that quinocetone, a toxic chemical, increases cell death when VDAC2 oligomerizes, and DIDS (4′4′-diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid—a blocker of VDAC oligomerization) blocked oligomerization and cell death [77]. The gene discussed is VDAC2; the disease is hepatocellular carcinoma.
