Both the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standard of Medical Care in Diabetes and Endocrine Society Clinical Practice guidelines have made recommendations (1) in support of the use of a basal-bolus insulin regimen (BBIR) in noncritically ill patients in the hospital setting and (2) against the sole use of correctional scale insulin (also referred to as a sliding scale insulin regimen) due to increased risk of hyperglycemia [10–12]. The gene discussed is INS; the disease is diabetes mellitus.
