The pharmacological activation of PPARβ/δ using GW501516, a PPARβ/δ agonist, increases utrophin A expression in a murine model of DMD—the mdx mice—by binding to the PPRE in the promoter region of utrophin A. GW501516 treatment improved mdx sarcolemmal integrity and protected mdx skeletal muscles against eccentric contraction (ECC)-induced damage. This evidence concerns the gene PPARD and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
