The functional relevance of the TLR9 rs187084 (−1486T/C) polymorphism has been previously shown in pulmonary tuberculosis, demonstrating that the variant C allele of this polymorphism increases the transcriptional activity of TLR9, which in turn reduces the expression of inflammatory cytokines such as IFNγ and TNFα [33].
