SLC40A1 and Friedreich ataxia: It is essential to note that ferroportin-1 is a critical transmembrane protein involved in iron export.19 Previous findings have highlighted iron metabolism dysregulation in heart autopsies of Friedreich's ataxia patients.20,21 Moreover, iron concentrations in plasma samples were found to be significantly lower in Friedreich's ataxia patients compared with healthy controls.22 These observations align cohesively with our results, further emphasizing the potential role of Slc40a1 in the pathological mechanisms underlying Friedreich's ataxia.
