Alpha, Gamma and Mu heavy chain diseases remain a distinct subgroup separated from plasma cell neoplasms, which in addition to plasmacytoma and plasma cell myeloma now includes three different paraneoplastic syndromes: POEMS (Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, M-protein, and Skin changes), TEMPI (telangiectasias, elevated erythropoietin level and erythrocytosis, monoclonal gammopathy, perinephric fluid collections, and intrapulmonary shunting) and AESOP (Adenopathy and Extensive Skin Patch Overlying a Plasmacytoma). The gene discussed is MYOM2; the disease is plasma cell myeloma.
