The incidence of apoptotic markers as Caspase 3 supports the idea that some topographies (especially SM) might be related to an increase in the inflammatory response, as also corroborated by the increase of TGF-β, which acts as controller of the immune response and as anti-inflammatory molecule also playing a pivotal role in the returning to the balance in inflammatory periodontal diseases including gingivitis and periodontitis [55–57]. The gene discussed is CASP3; the disease is gingivitis.
