LGALS3 and pulmonary hypertension: Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a β-galactosyl-bindinglectin that specifically interacts with carbohydrate ligands presented, e.g., on the cell surface.1 Thispleiotropic molecule has a wide range of functions in vivo, ranging from wound healing,2 osteogenesis, and chondrogenesis3 to endothelial tubeformation.4 However, it is also implicatedin the onset and progression of cancer5 and cardiovascular diseases, namely heart failure, atherosclerosis, and systemic and pulmonary hypertension.6−8
