AQP4 and Hyperkalemia: Despite the fact that several studies have suggested interactions between AQP4 channels and Na+/K+ ATPase in the clearance of extracellular K+ (Illarionova et al., 2010; Strohschein et al., 2011), Walch et al. (2020) showed that even though the Na+/K+ ATPase comprises significant part of astrocyte swelling during mild or moderate hyperkalemia, its action is AQP4 independent.
