In several types of carcinomas, including breast, colon, and ovarian cancers, PGC-1α is frequently downregulated, and its downregulation is associated with a loss of metabolic flexibility and an increased reliance on glycolysis for energy production, even in the presence of oxygen, a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect [31,32,33].
