Longitudinal studies analysing the leukocyte transcriptome of COVID-19 patients have described a molecular profile characterized by robust overrepresentation of interferon-related gene expression, marked decrease of transcriptional levels of genes contributing to general protein synthesis and bioenergy metabolism, and dysregulated expression of genes associated with coagulation, platelet function, complement activation, and TNF/IL-6 signalling (Ahern et al. 2022; Gill et al. 2020; Daamen et al. 2022; Yan et al. 2021; McClain et al. 2021).
