In a study of acute and chronic schistosomiasis liver fibrosis, silymarin (750 mg/kg/day, 5 days/week for 6 weeks) significantly reduced hepatic HYP levels, TGF-β1 and MMP-2 expression and restored GSH levels in both stages, reducing hepatic egg load and regulating granuloma size (El-Lakkany et al., 2012). The gene discussed is TGFB1; the disease is schistosomiasis.
