McDiarmid et al. previously used Cell Painting data to reveal 16 FDA-approved drugs from five mechanistic groups that were able to reverse morphological signatures associated with Alzheimer disease – risk gene SORL1 variants in neural progenitor cells.111 Overall, the broad and multidimensional data generated by Cell Painting assays not only provides opportunities for new insights into complex cellular responses but can also reveal novel therapeutic targets and strategies for drug discovery and repurposing. The gene discussed is SORL1; the disease is early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
