EPCAM wasdiscovered four decades ago as a tumor antigen in colorectal carcinomasand serves as an anchor molecule on circulating tumor cells (CTCs),which are considered the major source of metastatic cancer cells.83 Recent data indicate that EPCAM becomes downregulatedby approximately 10-fold on cancer cells during dissemination intothe bloodstream.84 Another transcriptomeprofiling study in colorectal cancer validated EPCAM downregulationon CTCs compared to primary tumors.85 However,a limited literature is available regarding EPCAM expression patternsin bone cells. The gene discussed is EPCAM; the disease is cancer.
