Both upregulation and downregulation of ILK expression and/or activity have been implicated in the pathogenesis of a wide variety of diseases such as diabetes [15], myocardial infarction [16], obesity [17] or pulmonary hypertension [18], suggesting ILK as a molecular target and a prognostic biomarker of these diseases.
