A longitudinal study that evaluated the associations between cardiovascular biomarkers and metabolic syndrome during puberty showed adolescent individuals with metabolic syndrome already had several altered markers when prepubertal, such as body mass index (BMI) Z score, waist circumference, insulin, homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and leptin, unlike those without metabolic syndrome, highlighting the importance of the prepubertal period in relation to future comorbidities.6 This evidence concerns the gene LEP and metabolic syndrome.
