Male and female biological differences in the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) and transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) receptors, as well as immunological differences, such as lower production of pro-inflammatory interleukin-6 (IL-6) after viral infection in females, could explain the higher development of post-COVID symptoms [31]. The gene discussed is TMPRSS2; the disease is viral infectious disease.
