In this work,we focus on the neuroendocrine peptide hormone humanislet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) that is found to be aggregated inamyloidogenic plaques in individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes(T2DM).4 Under conditions of hyperglycemia, the secretion of insulin and hIAPP are upregulated with a disproportionateincrease of hIAPP.5 Increased secretionof hIAPP in severe hyperglycemia has been suggested to facilitatethe formation of hIAPP derived amyloid deposits and pancreatic isletβ-cell dysfunction.6 The gene discussed is INS; the disease is type 2 diabetes mellitus.
