Our research group was the first to notice that patients with SA and MDD exhibited significantly elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-12 and IL-6 in their plasma and that these cytokines were associated with an increased number of nonclassical (CD16++CD14−) monocytes and a higher activation state of classical monocytes (CD16-CD14+ (Nowak et al., 2019). The gene discussed is CD14; the disease is major depressive disorder.
