Zheng et al. demonstrated that the overexpression of circRNA Samd4 reduces the size of fibrotic areas and improves cardiac function after myocardial infarction; the results of a functional analysis show that circSamd4 reduces Vdac1 expression by recruiting Vcp proteins to the mitochondria, thereby maintaining mitochondrial dynamics and reducing mitochondria-derived ROS (Fig. 8) [99].
