Given that megakaryocytes express GPIIb/IIa and GPIb/IX, they are being targeted by ITP autoantibodies which, in conjunction with the reduced stimulation by thrombopoietin (TPO), leads to insufficient formation of megakaryocytes and thrombocytes [17,18]. The gene discussed is ITGA2B; the disease is autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura.
