ACE2 and COVID-19: The management of COVID-19 is still a challenge due to the SARS-CoV-2 variants continue to emerge.1 No matter how the variants mutation happened in the virus, the interaction between the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 and the primary host cell membrane receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is indispensable for viral attachment and entry.2,3 Accordingly, tissues with higher expression of ACE2 are more susceptible to COVID-19 infection than tissues with lower expression.4,5 Hence, reducing ACE2 expression is a robust strategy for impeding SARS-CoV-2 binding to host cells.
