Using 5XFAD mice, a transgenic mouse model of AD characterized by Aβ plaque deposition in the brain (93), their study indicated that microglia from Trem2−/− 5XFAD mice were less metabolically competent due to significantly reduced mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and glycolytic activity (43). This evidence concerns the gene MTOR and Alzheimer disease.
