Three different proteins whose loss of function leads to severe autoimmunity, AIRE, FEZF2, and CHD4, have been shown to drive the expression of non-redundant sets of peripheral tissue antigens in mTECs (Ramsey et al., 2002; Takaba et al., 2015; Tomofuji et al., 2020).
