TLR4 and infection: Leal et al., for example, demonstrated that (1) TLR4 deficiency results in increased fungal (A. fumigatus) burden relative to infected wild-type controls, and (2) TLR4−/− mice do not display defects in neutrophil recruitment during infection, suggesting that the TLR4 pathway has a specific role in promoting the fungicidal activity of these cells once they are recruited to the cornea.59
