IL5 and allergic asthma: For example, in a murine model of allergic asthma the inflammatory cytokine IL-5 was shown to trigger the release of the neuropeptide vasoactive intestinal protein (VIP) from a subset of pulmonary sensory neurons which, in turn, perpetuated inflammation by acting on CD4+ T cells and innate lymphoid cells, increasing the production of TH2 cytokines associated with driving asthmatic conditions.
