IL6 and COVID-19: From the very beginning, broadly disseminated immune dysregulation, characterized by the cytokine storm, was described as an important component of the pathophysiology of COVID-19, and the interleukin- 1 (IL-1) –interleukin-6 (IL-6) axis was described as one of the most biologically relevant signalling pathways in the SARS-CoV-2-induced hyperinflammatory reaction, finding a high correlation between IL-6 in serum and COVID-19 prognosis [[1], [2], [3], [4]].
