In terms of inhibiting inflammasomes, Yuan et al. (2021) found that metformin has a protective effect on brain damage caused by ischemia/reperfusion, and its mechanism of action includes activating the AMPK pathway, promoting autophagy, removing damaged mitochondria through autophagy, reducing cell necrosis caused by NLRP3 inflammasome activation by damaged mitochondria, and thereby protecting against ischemia/reperfusion brain damag. This evidence concerns the gene NLRP3 and ischemia.
