Interestingly, several studies could show that cancer cells upregulate 5-LO levels under cell stress conditions, while expression of the enzyme is suppressed when oxygen and nutrients are aplenty: Genotoxic stress triggered by treatment with cytostatic drugs activates the central tumor suppressor p53, a transcription factor that acts as a cellular stress sensor, tightly controls genomic stability and cell cycle progression and thereby regulates cell death and differentiation. Here, TP53 is linked to cancer.
