MAPT and neurodegenerative disease: For these reasons and others, over the past several decades, researchers have initiated non-mammalian models such as fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster; Drosophila), nematodes (Caenorhabditis elegans; C. elegans), zebrafish (Danio rerio) and sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus) to model human neurodegenerative diseases and to map the etiopathogenesis of aberrant tau formation after TBI (20).
