After analyzing and comparing peripheral blood samples collected from patients with wet AMD, dry AMD, and age-matched controls, it has been found that the levels of a variety of cytokines, such as CD163 (M2 macrophage-specific marker), show significant between-group differences and are related to active vascular leakage in patients with wet AMD, suggesting that these cytokines may be used as diagnostic biomarkers of AMD [66]. Here, CD163 is linked to wet macular degeneration.
