The percentage of alveolar macrophages (AM) staining positively for SOCS3 (Figures 1A, B) was higher in smokers with [68 (6.6–99)%] and without COPD [48 (8–100)%] than in non-smokers [9.6 (1.9–61)%, p = 0.002 and p = 0.03 respectively, Figure 1C]. The gene discussed is SOCS3; the disease is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
