Despite the identification of B-type natriuretic peptide, matrix metalloproteinase-9, D-dimer, and glial fibrillary acidic protein as potential diagnostic biomarkers for stroke within 24 h in a recent systematic review (Misra et al., 2020), the currently available biomarkers lack the desired sensitivity, specificity, rapidity, and precision.
