The reduction in higher order branches, reduction in nodes, and trending decrease of canalicular density with diabetes (Figures 1 and 2) is consistent with age-related reductions in dendrite number, which precede age-related decreases in osteocyte number30 and reduced nodes in an osteocyte-intrinsic TGF-β knockout in which perilacunar remodeling is arrested.22 Here, TGFB1 is linked to diabetes mellitus.
