Shintani et al. (2008) reported that cells plated on collagen I showed several mesenchymal marker upregulations, including N-cadherin, vimentin, smooth muscle actin, and fibronectin, while E-cadherin was downregulated, concluding that collagen type I was capable of inducing an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-like response in lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549 (Shintani et al., 2008). The gene discussed is VIM; the disease is lung adenocarcinoma.
