The presence of neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) composed of the microtubule-associated protein tau is one of the hallmarks of AD, frontotemporal dementia with Parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP17), and several other neurodegenerative diseases, including progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), globular glial tauopathy (GGT), corticobasal degeneration (CBD), argyrophilic grain disease (AGD), or aging-related tau astrogliopathy (ARTAG), collectively known as tauopathies [5,54]. The gene discussed is MAPT; the disease is argyrophilic grain disease.
