Concomitant with medication, a healthy lifestyle can havea protectiveeffect against hypertension.9 In this vein, recent reports have suggested that pulse consumption is associatedwith a blood pressure-lowering effect.10−12 Several pulse components, such as phenolic compounds, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), anddietary fibers, are believed to contribute to this hypotensive effect.13 The release of antioxidant and ACE inhibitorpeptides after gastrointestinal digestion of pulse proteins also hasthe potential to contribute to this beneficial heath effect. This evidence concerns the gene ACE and hypertensive disorder.
