Consequently, carriers of the Ala358 variant of the IL-6R were shown to be less susceptible to several inflammatory diseases, such as congestive heart disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and rheumatoid arthritis (Zhang et al., 2022; Rose-John et al., 2023), possibly due to attenuation of classical IL-6 signaling by reduction of the membrane-bound IL-6R on the surface of target cells.
