While reductions in cell number and concomitant increases in soma size occurred only in 9-month-old 5xFAD mice (Fig. 1), cortical TH+ nerve fibers appear to degenerate early at the onset of pathological changes (Fig. 2), and may be the substrate for altered endogenous NE signaling in AD at a time when LC neuronal cell bodies are still unaffected.
