This is because, whereas neurofibroma Schwann cells (SC and/or their precursors) are the crucial pathogenic cells in neurofibroma and the only cells containing biallelic NF1 mutations (Serra et al, 2001; Pemov et al, 2017), plexiform neurofibromas (PNF) also contain mast cells, dendritic cells, endothelial cells, T cells, fibroblasts, perineural-like cells, and macrophages. Here, NF1 is linked to plexiform neurofibroma.
