AQP11 and chronic kidney disease: Both protein and transcript levels for AQP11 in kidney cells were up-regulated in response to exposure to increased glucose, promoting protection from the effects of metabolically generated reactive oxygen species; the protective effect was compromised after siRNA-knockdown of AQP11 levels, and suggested interesting potential clinical relevance to diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease who might carry AQP11 sequence polymorphisms [15].
