When an anemic woman becomes pregnant, anemia not only puts her own health at risk by sometimes causing fatigue, loss of productivity, breathlessness, dizziness, or headache but also can negatively impact the unborn child by increasing the likelihood of low birth weight, preterm delivery, stillbirth, low iron stores at birth or low Hb concentrations [34, 35]. The gene discussed is GSTM1; the disease is anemia (phenotype).
