Interestingly, high dose simvastatin, a CNS-penetrant statin, attenuates brain atrophy and disease progression in patients with SPMS73 and a phase-III clinical trial testing the efficacy of simvastatin in SPMS is in progress (MS-STAT2; NCT03387670, http://www.isrctn.com/ISRCTN82598726). This evidence concerns the gene STAT2 and secondary progressive multiple sclerosis.
