CD71 expression was more tightly correlated with markers of innate immune cells (LILRB1, CD64, CD1d and CD1c) and markers of activation (SLC3A2, CD86 and ICAM-1) in the COVID-19 group than in HCs (Fig. 4d), suggesting an increased demand for iron in concert with the activation of innate immune cells during a viral infection.
