These results appear to be driven by strong methylation-dependence in flu-infected cells, as the average within-individual correlation between DNA methylation and gene expression is 2.44 times as large after infection (r=–0.261 ± 0.006) than at baseline (r=–0.106 ± 0.008) in IFNA-specific mSTARR-seq enhancers (Figure 3C; Supplementary file 18). The gene discussed is IFNA1; the disease is infection.
