In the context of this hypothesis paper, these findings raise the question of whether the furin-mediated amplification of the spike protein/ACE2 binding results in enhanced downregulation of ACE2 expression and subsequent elevation of Ang II and whether these events may lead to the appearance of early pathogenic events for Alzheimer’s disease in some COVID-19 patients. This evidence concerns the gene AGT and early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
