Eight metabolic issues contribute to this, decreased peripheral glucose uptake, increased hepatic glucose production, increased lipolysis, reduced peripheral use of glucose in muscle cells, compensatory insulin secretion, unappropriated glucagon release, inadequate secretion of gastrointestinal incretin hormones, and enhanced renal tubular glucose reabsorption, such as we observed in obese women with breast cancer [24]. The gene discussed is GCG; the disease is breast cancer.
